Latex Pillows

Latex pillows are great pillows for back and side sleepers. Natural latex is poured into a pillow shaped mold with perforations; and what emerges is a spongy pillow. Latex pillows give firm support for the neck, yet they are soft enough to relieve pressure on your head. The perforations on the pillow prevent a buildup of heat and moisture, keeping the pillow at a constant temperature all night long.

To use latex as a pillow filling, it must be foamed to create a matrix of tiny connected to one another bubbles that give it bounce and spring. Latex pillows are very sensitive to pressure, and has a prompt bounce-back, unlike memory foam pillows. Latex pillows are unique kind of pillows, because the latex pillows offer different properties and a different experience than memory foam pillows.

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR LATEX PILLOW

How to care for your latex pillow by Washing

Latex pillows are easily stained and it is always good to cover them with pillow cases, most preferably with zippers to keep them from dust and body oil. These pillows are hypoallergenic and very resistant to mildew and likewise dust mite. Sometimes labels with care and maintenance guide procedures are always attached to every latex pillow that you would like to purchase. It is good and advisable to follow these instructions.

How to Wash Your Latex Pillow

Always know that latex pillows should not be washed using washing machines and dryers. It is important to note never soak these pillows in water nor expose it to direct sunlight. This type of pillows should only be hand washed and never wring, stretch, twist or scrunch them.

Buckwheat Pillow

Buckwheat Hull Pillows are good for back, side and stomach sleepers. The reason that they offer benefits to all three sleeping positions is because the pillow is completely adjustable. Buckwheat pillows are thermodynamic, so they remain a constant temperature throughout the night.

The 2 Benefits of a Buckwheat Pillow: An Honest Assessment

Superior Support

Your pillow’s most important job is to provide you comfort and support your head and neck, elevating them off your mattress. A good pillow will hold your spine in what’s called “neutral alignment.” Neutral alignment helps to keep all the bits and pieces in your back in in their ideal positions, preventing excessive pressure on your discs, muscles and nerves. The right pillow will provide the support needed to maintain a neutral and sound sleeping position all night without readjustment, allowing you to get the best rest possible.

Stays Cool

Down, foam and other pillow types maintain body heat and get hot quickly and become uncomfortable. Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night and had to flip your pillow to the cool side? That doesn’t happen with buckwheat pillows. You’re on the cool side all night.

How to Clean Or Maintain Your Buckwheat Pillows (Without Destroying Them)

Buckwheat pillows can last can last for many years with maintenance and proper care. The first and most important thing you can do to keep your buckwheat pillow in good shape and keep it protected inside a standard pillowcase just like any other type of pillow. This will allow you to keep it clean or wash t the pillowcase intermittently, so that the pillow itself doesn’t need cleaning so frequently.

Eventually all pillows get stained, sullied, soiled or even sometimes stinky

When your buckwheat pillow’s better days seem to have passed, refresh it with a wash:

  1. Remove the buckwheat hulls by pouring them into a larger container. A large paper grocery bag works better than plastic as it will hold its shape, making pouring much easier.
  2. Turn the fabric case inside-out and ensure that all the buckwheat hulls out of the crannies so that they don’t get into your washing machine. Careful not to spill!
  3. Toss the case into the washing machine. Don’t forget, cotton can shrink! To avoid shrinkage and wear, wash it in cold water (75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit) and keep it out of the dryer (air dry).
  4. Replace the buckwheat hulls. ProTip: ask someone to pour while you hold the fabric case.

What about cleaning the buckwheat hull fill?

Keep the outside of your pillow laundered sometimes and you will not need to fear about the buckwheat hulls inside. Accidents sometimes happen though. If you’ve stained your buckwheat hulls somehow, you can try letting them sit indoors under gently circulating air, preferably in sunlight, to remove any moisture or odors. Spread them out evenly on a flat and clean surface, or better yet, in a shallow container like this one (keep the lid off).

*Note* If you’ve spilled water on your pillow remove the wet hulls immediately. As long as you dry them quickly, they’ll be good as new. A beer or soda spill is can be more trouble than it’s worth. For these situations we recommend replacement buckwheat hulls.

Memory Foam Pillows

Memory foam pillows are good for side and back sleepers. Memory foam is heat sensitive and conforms to your head and neck as you lay on it. This material is usually advertised as molding to your unique shape, reducing stress points, and then springing back into place. Memory foam is a hypoallergenic material and available in several densities. The higher the density of the foam, the more support it offers and usually, the better the quality. Most memory foam pillows are molded into a contoured shape and provide wonderful cervical neck support.

So you have a super supportive memory foam pillow, and you love it. You use it all the time. After a while you will want to know how you can maintain memory foam pillows. You should ask that question, too. There are several reasons you should consider washing your side sleeper pillows on a regular basis. First of all, it just makes sense to provide the freshest, cleanest sleeping surface for your head. You are going to spend about eight hours a night with your face next to the pillow you use, and it should smell its best and provide a hygienic and healthy cushion for your comfort.

  • Memory foam pillows can be easily cleaned by rubbing warm water over them until it comes out clean and neat.
  • Take off the pillow case and gently put the pillow in a full sink of water or just let the water run from the tap over the top of the pillow, moving all around it around to get all of the inner padding to be flushed out.
  • Do not put wash a memory foam pillow in the washing machine. The strong tension of machine washing will destroy or break up the padding inside the pillow and weaken or destroy it.
  • Do not use a dryer on a foam pillow.
  • Always place it in a well-ventilated area until it is dry. You can also hang it out to dry. Hanging the pillow outdoors on a sunny day is an excellent way to dry the insides of a foam pillow quickly.

Body Pillows

Body pillows are great pillows for side sleepers and pregnant women. Many people enjoy sleeping on their side, but the weight of their arm on top tends to compress the chest, which can become uncomfortable after a while. A body pillow will help prevent the compression of the chest by supporting the arm. Although a body pillow may be long enough to bend around and support the head, it may be too thick. It would be beneficial to use a separate pillow for your head.

Crying for Your Body Pillow:

Cover It

The best way to keep your body pillow looking new is by covering it. Body pillows can absorb sweat, dust and skin particles over their lifetimes, so it’s smart to keep them covered with pillowcases that are made for long body pillows. If you don’t have a body-pillow case, consider wrapping yours with two regular pillowcases or covering it with a sheet or blanket.

Shake It

Make it a habit to uncover and shake your body pillow frequently, such as every time you change your sheets. By shaking your pillow, you’ll remove any built-up dust or dander that may have made its way past your cover. Take this time to switch out the body pillow’s cover with a fresh, clean one.

Wash It

Although your pillow’s cover will protect it from the majority of elements that threaten to soil it, it may need the occasional washing. Check the tag to make sure the pillow is machine washable before proceeding, and then wash it on a low-heat setting. Some pillows can be machine dried, but check the care instructions before doing so. If it can’t be dried in a dryer, leave it in an open, well-lit and ventilated area until dry. Since body pillows are large, you may need to take it to a Laundromat and wash it in an oversized washing machine.

Fluff It

If your body pillow is feeling a bit lumpy or even flat, the problem can usually be solved by a bit of light fluffing. Fluff your body pillow every couple of weeks to ensure maximum comfort. You may also want to try repositioning your body pillow each time you use it to equally distribute the wear.
